I work via an interdisciplinary approach, using writing, 3D computer animation, motorised sculptures, film and participation to form narrative-based projects. Some recent interests are around how technology, ecological and interspecies thinking can produce fictions that might question local contemporary conditions, and could form generative alternatives. Since 2020, I have collaborated with artist Ed Compson, as well as university researchers, focus groups and schoolchildren, on a series of artworks, workshops, and research experiments. These have involved technologies that might only become visual through translation, from seabed scanning, to electromagnetic listening, to recording wind speed. We do this to engage with a world that operates — and is made operational — through non-visual means, with visual and material effects. This approach, combined with a critical employment of fiction and an experimental use of tools, allows for a questioning of how machine and ecological thinking operate, interpellate us, and affect imagination. Our research considered how the meeting of contemporary offshore wind turbines with the geological history of Doggerland could be a tool to creatively explore the historical, cultural, and political narratives surrounding wind energy and oceanic thinking. The approach to this was through a responsive workshop practice, site visits, connections with archaeologists, filming, collaborative making and a varied technological practice. From 2021-2025 I was a Producer of the Digital Programme at The Photographers’ Gallery, which focuses on social, ecological, aesthetic and political issues arising from the photographic image in network culture. The programme works on computational photography, synthetic imaging, digital labour, machine vision, automation and the camera. Fully submerged around 8000 years ago, Doggerland was a place of human inhabitation and settlement. It is an area now understood through proxies: through seabed scanning and filming, sediment sampling, the finding or trawling of artefact. Offshore wind turbines are literally embedded in the same Doggerland earth – massive swathes of data arrive from scans taken for undersea cable routes that transfer energy from offshore wind farms in the middle of the North Sea to the shore. Presenting a mix of collected and adapted material from marine archaeological research and wind energy construction, The New Scroby Sands Offshore Wind Farm Information Centre positions the North Sea as a discursive site, informed by a looping, cyclical time; a nonlinear poetics of the sea. meeting between offshore wind energy and Doggerland, the submerged landscape that used to connect the UK to mainland Europe. The film frames this meeting through a nonlinear poetics of the North Sea, where archaeological exploration and speculative energy futures occur simultaneously. The film includes footage from the North Sea seabed taken during an expedition by the Submerged Landscape Research Centre from the University of Bradford in summer 2024. A voiceover reads entries from a sonar scan of the seabed commissioned by a wind energy company, looking at potential archaeological sites around the turbine bases. The cut-out sections trace both existing offshore wind turbines and projected developments over the next decade.Suspended within the plinth is a fragment of fired sediment extracted from the North Sea seabed by Europe’s Lost Frontiers research group (The University of Bradford) in 2016. 05.04.2024–02.06.2024 Arieh Frosh, Ilê Sartuzi, Eetu Sihvonen As part of a group exhibition set in the aftermath of a 1980s birthday party, A ˢhˡaͥuͫnͥᶰtᵍing (2024) was shown on a CRT television. A ˢhˡaͥuͫnͥᶰtᵍing (2024) is a film with intersecting themes: the first, a comparison of visual effects between the 1980s and now, taking the character of Slimer as one that has slipped from childhood VHS to become manipulable on personal 3D software. A move that started with a 1984 rubber and spandex model based on a nighttime vision of John Belushi, who is dragged into 2024 as a CGI sequel — a haunting made material. The second theme looks at how past decisions shape the present, how the traces of decision making might recur and recur. Possible life routes diverted in a moment of sliming. A ˢhˡaͥuͫnͥᶰtᵍing uses a 3D model that is freely available online, which is then animated and placed within phone footage shot over the last two months. A series of motorised plant-like floor sculptures that twitch, and at times, shuffle. Their downward arcs have opened up another way of being, one that is connected and communicative. The animation consists of a fresco of creatures and objects that have grown on a wall, tangled together by bio-technical tubes. They survive on the energy from the tubes, which are both gastrointestinal tract and fibre optic cable. The animation asks what kinds of frescos could ‘grow’ from the contemporary coming-together of networked technology, bio-matter, and myths. It asks how information spreads, and how it mixes with varied personal experiences. Throughout the animation, each of the creatures and objects are isolated one by one. The VoiceOver and overlaid diagrammatic animations reveal a mix of information about the objects, along with fictional/non-fictional stories. Spanning workshops, collaboration, and mentorship, the residency program facilitates new methodologies for working collectively online. The fourteen SPUR residents explore the boundaries of their digital practice through a pseudo identity. In the culmination of this period of research and exchange, SPUR.WORLD employs the avatars’ speculative look in forming digital identity and environment. Consisting of fourteen virtual worlds, the online exhibition represents the subconscious domain of the residents' custom avatars.
